I related so strongly to the President's message: life is often dark and almost always confusing, and it's only when we act out of love that we are truly walking in the light.  Most clearly this is manifest in that helpless love we hold for our children and, by extension, our responsibility to protect all children.

He really did think about this message, and its political implications.  He won't back down.  This isn't primarily political for him: it's a core commitment to who he is.

We are truly blessed as a nation to have a leader who is so thoughtful and deeply in touch with his own humanity.

P.S. You could really hear the influence of Reinhold Niebuhr in his address, by the way.

"A very popular error: having the courage of one's convictions; rather it is a matter of having the courage for an attack on one's convictions." -- Friedrich Nietzsche
