  •  How about the mother's mental health? (1+ / 0-)

Who in their right mind keeps that kind of firepower around in their house?

    •  She grew up in rural New Hampshire... (0+ / 0-)

she sounds like someone who supported her right to own guns and enjoyed them as a hobby.  That is part of the gun culture....guns are fun to shoot and awesome to own and collect.  I think the fun aspect of gun ownership also combines with the fear aspect.  A woman living with her child in an upper class home may fear home invasion or economic collapse and think her firearms will save her life.  Frankly she sounds like a lot of people in the USA.  I don't think she should be allowed to buy those magazines or clips or whatever and the same is true for her high power rifle.  She wasn't the militia, but she didn't defend herself.  I don't think she sounds in any way mentally ill.  I suspect the son had some complex mental problems that worsened as he grew older.  People with extreme delusional behavior can act normal to others, but the mom probably didn't know what to do.  Obviously, in hindsight, she should have taken her weapons from the home.  That is the strong advice of any mental health professional.

"Fun" and "Fear" and "awesome to own and collect" only bring visions of "shock and awe" to me. In any case, apparently this one particular "hobbyist" became her son's first victim, that we know of.

        May she rest in peace.

        Him, not so much.
