flitedocnm Sarah Kendzior's hatchet job on Liza Long's blog and Long's piece "I am Adam Lanza's Mother."  I believe it is Sarah Kendzior who is guilty of an injustice.  What a shame that flitedocnm was convinced that he had not thoroughly investigated "I am Adam Lanza's Mother" and so delinked from this most valuable article.  I realize that few of us have the time, of course, to investigate every single piece before linking. A more thorough investigation of Kendzior's detractors in her comment section would have allowed Liza Long's valuable link to have remained in flitedocnm's excellent diary.

I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

    •  Kendzior is not the only critic (0+ / 0-)

and some others have read the same blogs with more careful attention and written with less vitriol.

Here are two things I find especially off-putting:

      1. She disguises the kid's first name - but then republishes under her own name, so anyone who knows her (or can Google her up) can easily figure out who she's writing about.

      2. She's gone on a media binge, appearing on CNN, NBC, and other mass-media outlets.

All of this publicity is helping her "disturbed" son - how, exactly?

Also, do these names sound familiar?

      Kaycee Nicole
      Jesse Jubilee James
      Mike Feigen

They, and many others, were fictitious people with melodramatic online "lives" and very elaborate backstories, who fooled many people - including some who got too close - into thinking they were real.

There are catfish out there, people, and some of them can be very convincing.

      If it's
      Not your body,
      Then it's
      Not your choice
      And it's
      None of your damn business!

      •  I don't care who wrote this (0+ / 0-)

Could have been satan him/herself.  This viral piece helped people who have had no experience with this type of child, understand the brick wall of mental health care, more than anything else I've read in the last few days.  This woman obviously has up close and uncomfortable experience with desperation - no one could have written this piece without some "inside knowledge." But even if she hadn't (I do not for a moment believe that she is making it up) she wrote something that really hit readers hard and meaningfully.

"Off-putting?" I find these funerals to be off-putting.  I don't want to see any more of them.

My post on facebook Sunday that I linked to Liza Lang's writing:

I’ve witnessed many mothers and fathers exactly like the mother writing this article, whose very seriously mentally ill children were hospitalized in an inpatient facility but with a limited amount of time allotted by their “For Profit” insurance. I heard more than one mother ask what she could do to keep her child in a secure facility to prevent harm to other family members and maybe to the community. The only thing in some instances was for the child to be abandoned and become a “ward of the state.” In that situation, she would have to abandon her child, but then she would be guilty of a crime. “For Profit”, indeed.

Having worked in child and adolescent psychiatric facilities, along with having had a family therapy practice, this mother’s story is not a new one. A psychiatrist and I were working with a family with a very severely depressed and troubled 8 year old boy. The “For-Profit” insurance company said that he was only allowed 6 sessions. His psychiatrist and I both called the insurance company. The “gatekeeper” taking the call wanted to talk to the child herself to see if he really needed any more sessions. “For Profit” needed to maximize profits on the back of this baby. It’s a constant battle with insurers to get adequate care for those they “insure.” Because, of course, they are For Profit.

I heard Bill O'Reilly say ( because I like to watch Faux News when tragic things happen) that we cannot stop these kinds of things because it is EVIL and evil exists in this world and there is nothing we can do about it. Evil? Just going to give up and label it so we don't have to take any responsibility? What a “magical-thinking,” wussie thing to say. We could do something about it.

How about increased access to mental health care, prenatal care, general health care, increased access to birth control, increased access to education, increased access to and education about adequate nutrition, increased access to quality child care, decrease in unemployment, decrease in harmful environmental chemicals in foods and air and water, decrease in head injuries, increase support of our teachers, firefighters, police, our first responders, decrease in useless wars that are only intended to line the pockets of those who financially profit. Well you get the idea. Why would anyone vote against these things in order to support “For Profit?” Why is the United States the only nation to rely heavily on for-profit insurers for basic health care ?

And by the way, how about the MEDIA stop glorifying this carnage?!? How many are watching every minute of this horror, right now, and planning their own 15 minutes of infamy? Let’s stop showing them how much attention they will get if they can “top” this one.
