The key is that most gun deaths are not the result of pre-meditated acts.  For murders, they're often moments of impulse rage, drunk or on drugs, and a handy gun makes an aggravated assault into a full blown murder.

For accidents, if you slip with a knife you tend to cut yourself.  Maybe you even need stitches.  Forget just once to clear your weapon before cleaning it and boom, someone dies.  Forget just once to lock it and a child gets ahold of it, well...tragedy ensues.  Your kid figures out where the keys are and...

For suicide, almost every means of suicide is significantly harder to actually succeed in killing yourself, and usually leaves some time for reconsideration.  Even if you decide to jump off a high place, you have to travel to it, climb up it, etc.  If you take a bunch of pills you might regret it and phone 911 before it was too late.  If a gun is present at that moment of ultimate despair, life ends where if that gun wasn't present, the result might have been a suicide attempt without death.

Nothing kills as quickly and easily as guns.
