    When the old society clearly is exhausted and the new not yet charted, there's really nothing to be certain of.  I don't think you can really trace back through (for instance) the trail of distopian movies ("On The Beach", "Blade Runner", "The Road", ...) to find somebody behind it all.

    In this case it seems that being somewhat isolated in a rural or exurban setting with a distant sense of the massive city centers just over the horizon (Paul Ryan's "urban voters") shared in a general way by the larger community is enough to set off a sense of impending collapse in some.  After all, it was a not totally dissimilar setting in which Jesus predicted the imminent coming of Heaven on Earth.

    This makes reform very important, not to make the new world but to make people's lives less desperate and disorganized in this, so that they/we can make calmer decisions in the transition.
