We ignored the fringe on the Right for 30+ years....and now they are pretty much running the show...

    Still think ignoring them works?

    •  Sure it does. (0+ / 0-)

Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone.

Gay marriage is legal in some states.  Culture is changing so youths find the concept obviously fair.

Two states this last election legalized pot.  Nobody, including the feds seem to think that's too big a deal.

These battles happen in slow-motion, so it's a little frustrating to live them, but there's some things that just eventually happen because the cultural argument is being won.

These issues happen this way because there's a cultural sense of how it just isn't fair, isn't sensible, isn't right to do them otherwise.  Culture isn't won like this by pretending that bullies have a valid point.  Culture is won simply by addressing what matters.

Crazy people are running the show on the right wing for a variety of complex reasons, one of them being that it's easier to sell fear, paranoia, dread and hate than it is to sell information.  The commentators they have are more or less demagoguing charlatans.  Everyone knows it, The Simpsons makes fun of it, Jon Stewart's job is practically to point it out, and casual, 'moderate' people seem to be amused by that fact.

Our system of government relies on making sound arguments, and having observers listen to them and attempt to figure out who's the most sane on policy.  Pretty much the only people fooled by Fox are partisan diehards, which is quite frankly, older people.  That's a problem that solves itself over time.  Albeit slowly, which can be annoying.

Certain arguments need no serious rebuttal.  Does anything more need to be said?

The only thing is, the Republican party is mostly organized and motivated around silly things.  Everything they do will motivate and organize their own opposition.

I think you are overly optimistic.

Few people today would advocate for slavery or dueling.

There have been significant changes in culture over time, we just don't tend to live long enough to notice all of them.  It's also frustrating that we're still struggling with slavery and animal cruelty, but at least those practices can only continue insofar as they're being hidden.

Back in the day, this comic was controversial and almost didn't get published.  I don't exactly have much hopes for tomorrow, or even 10 years from today, but 200 years, or 10 centuries, when everyone that matters to me (or ever will matter to me) are gone, I have a general confidence that what will go on will be better.
