I am not an NRA member and have no plans to ever join them.  I will not oppose an assault weapons ban, ammo sale limits or high capacity magazine limits.

But if the direction of the country ever becomes that the 2nd Amendment is wrong, that militia membership is mandatory and there is no individual right to own guns....

Then I will join the NRA in a heartbeat, whether they are a gun lobby or not.  I will not respond to tragedy by restricting rights, like Bush with the Patriot Act after 9-11.  I will not.

So there is your first task.  Want to defang the NRA?  Want to pull sane gun owners away from the NRA?  Then recognize the individual right to own guns.  Stop trying to take that away through discrimination at the group level instead of at the individual level through due process.

When people no longer feel that they need to join the NRA to protect their right to a hunting rifle, then work on gun regulation can move forward with an organization besides the NRA.

But any attempt to take away individual gun ownership rights will only make the NRA stronger.

this issue, this is the tack that needs to be taken.  What will be the rallying point or group for those who have varying, but rational beliefs on guns in our society?   Banning gun ownership....a losing position, we've seen that.  (We are the reality-based community, remember?)  Ain't gonna happen.  Sensible restrictions on automatic weapons?  Now we've got something we can work with, and more importantly, lots of other people to work with.

threat. While there are some people who don't recognize the individual right to own guns, there is no popular support for this position and no politicians of any prominence support it.

      •  Agreed. There is no threat to the 2nd amendment. (1+ / 0-)

It is just a figment of propaganda from the gun industry and the Birchers.

You can't make this stuff up.
