thing has actually happened successfully against considerable odds - for example cigarettes or pillage of the environment.

Once both of those things - supported by powerful institutional forces were glamorized - slowly they've been de-glamorized and in fact even vilified to an extent.  Yeah, not to the extent that the problem(s) have been solved - but the cultural mindset is definitely moving in a direction that progress is being made.

demographic changes. (Obama lost the white vote both times, but that is no longer a decisive factor because of the changing makeup of the American electorate).

The hard-core gun fetishists (which show a significant overlap with conservative-leaning WASPs who pride themselves on being God-fearing "real 'Merikans") are aging and dwindling in number. There aren't enough of them to keep these policies in place, if the rest of the country wants to change them.

The Dirty Harry gun culture is gradually becoming a thing of the past in an increasingly diverse and urbanized America. That is what will ultimately bring an end to it.

        1) A mixed-race president or 2) Majority public support for marriage equality in my lifetime. Both have happened. So things can change, and change fast.
