    ... make your own means to feed yourself subsistence-style, if you can just go overpower less militaristic neighbors and take their food.  (Not unlike what the first "Thanksgiving dinner" was like, kill the Indians for their crops.)

      They all have John Wayne fantasies of having to defend their homestead from the lazy fools who did not prepare and who hope to solve that inadequacy with piracy.

      Incidentally, this would be why they are not inspired by a vision of citizens working together. They are selfish jerks.

      that the Indians helped out the hungry settlers for the first one. The killing mostly came after.
