  •  No. But vilification and the stigma (8+ / 0-)

of the mentally ill by the public and the media is.

I would love a national conversation on mental illness in America and what we can do about it.  But turning those who suffer from it into potential, raving spree killers is not the way to go about it.

Equating the mentally ill with spree killers is not the right way.

if everyone continues to ignore them and not talk about them, how do you help them?

        ill in the country.

Part of that honesty is admitting that the mentally ill committing violence is far more rare than people think it is.  What is less rare is the social isolation, lack of resources, cutting programs and fearmongering that is stirred up by these terrible acts when they happen.

So, I agree with you on the fact that people are bringing up this topic.  But, I disagree on the modus operandi of how to do it.

I don't see any way if a perceived sigma prevents any discussion and more importantly action.

          •  Maybe use the time to break down the (0+ / 0-)

stereotypes and educate people about mental illness in the US?

And instead of just talking about the violence aspect of it, perhaps bring in other factors that might show the public why mental health is important.

Or else, you get a national conversation of nothing but the mentally ill, violence, and a lot of blame.

proven causative relationship. Mentally ill people should NOT have weapons nor access to weapons.

      •  Exactly. But not all mentally ill people (3+ / 0-)

        are spree killers.

And that is the reason why I worry about the social stigma and fearmongering of the mentally ill from this event in the media and the public.

That's all I am trying to say.
