I once owned six different firearns, but i got rid of most of them after columbine....still own a pistol which I keep in a gun safe that cost more than the gun did, and a Mauser rifle my dad brought home from WW2. I'm turning the pistol in next week, and will put the gunsafe up for sale at a very reasonable price. You inspired me. I would like to find a home for the Mauser, maybe a museum or a non nutty collector of WW2 memorabilia. If something like that doesn't pan out then the Mauser will go too. I got lots of other stuff to remember my dad by.

but are there a lot of people doing this?

      If not, there should be.

And maybe if you all, as "recovering gun owners" ;-), could make the idea go viral, no?

Seems a lot more effective than folks like me out there saying GET RID OF THE FUCKING GUNS ALREADY, WILLYA? ;-)

I don't know that you should feel compelled to give up the Mauser though.  Assuming it's a 98k, it's a beautiful weapon with historical significance, especially for your family.  That and I think bolt action rifles are one of the few that people should be allowed to keep.  Not much danger of someone shooting up a school with one of those.  You could always remove the firing pin, rendering it useless.
