      •  Sure. (0+ / 0-)

I sat there thinking about Japanese cultural evolution and its influence on current Japanese law in this regard. It all seems pretty normal.  The population was historically never allowed to arm itself

Then I look for the parallels in US-Japanese cultural evolution:

        - Similar ethnicity? - No
        - Similar religious traditions/behaviors (esp Bushido) - No
        - A frontier to explore, subdue and settle - within the last 200 years? - No
        - Militaristic governance for most of it's history (with concomitant interest in disarming civilians) - No
        - Fluid class mobility - No
        - Tradition of sidearms available legally to the general population? - No

        and so forth.

Yet we are asked to consider emulating an approach to firearms law fitted to their culture and expect it to work here?

I never said we should emulating everything that Japan does. And I also made mention in the conclusion about how hard it is to compare countries. But clearly they're doing something right.

There are no countries that are a perfect match historically or culturally to America. But that doesn't mean we can't learn anything from them. Particularly when we out-murder them by more than 10,000 every year.

Again, there were more accidental deaths cause by guns in America than purposeful ones in Japan. So let's not act we can't learn a thing or two.
