There are always better or worse things, so what?

The funny thing is that I oppose this deal but will not (1) condemn President Obama and (2) condemn all Democrats or say I shoudl not have voted for Obama.

Is it the deal that matters or something else with some folks here?

      •  Here's the thing: if it can always be worse (6+ / 0-)

and your main desire is to avoid the worst, you're engaging not in negotiations but perennial damage control. And you're constantly losing ground, b/c there's no end to it.  Stalin was worse than Franco. Franco was worse than Castro.

Or look at it another way:  if you pay a person 25c a day, it's still "worse" to pay them 10c a day. They can't live on either one, but it is worse.  If you pay them 10c a day, it's still better than paying them 5. And so on.  Even if you pay them nothing at all but their room and board, but allow them freedom of movement, imprisoning them in work camps is still "worse." Where does it end?

As long as the Republican party is willing to indulge in moving further and further to the right without stopping--and they've shown absolutely no signs of stopping for 30 years, and aren't showing any now--you can count on them to make the worse increasingly bad indefinitely. Forever.  And if the Democrats' only interest lies in being less bad than the Republicans, eventually you'll get Democrats that run to the right of George W. Bush, just as right now you have Democrats running to the right of Ronald Reagan.

        •  Why are we in trouble financially? Because of (3+ / 0-)

Bush, Cheney and GOP malfeasance in office for 8 years.  They did not pay their debts and loaded the credit card and are now screaming they have to have the social entitlements.  did you hear the Dems screaming at them?  i didn't.  did you see the Dems blocking them?  I didn't.

Why must the poor, seniors and disabled pay the cost?

go off the cliff.  If Obama does both Chained CPI and allows those making $250,000 to $399,000 to keep the Bush tax cut - what did we win?  Why did he campaign this way and then slap us in the face? And he expects me to support him or anyone who votes for this deal?

NO WAY!  I will walk away.
