e, that defeat of USSR - as good for the world as that was -might mean US politics moved rightward.  Not for the easy, facile but wrong reason that 'Reagan won the Cold War'.

But bc of the loss of 1) an easily understood example of 'evil' for US voters ('That's what they do in the Soviet Union!'), and 2) a voice that could not be ignored criticizing capitalism and the failures of the US policy from the Left rhetorically, no matter how Rightwing the USSR really was (and it was, very, rightwing in real policy).

In more modern terms, the Left end of the 'fair andf balanced' media bs fell off the cliff, so the narrative lurched right at the same time US cryptofascists were pushing it even further right.

        3) there's no longer any worst case scenario for what might happen to plutocrats who steal too brazenly.  Part of their annual bonus might be delayed?  Huh?

        4) There's no longer a need to convince developing countries that our way is the best.  Now there's no alternative, so there's no need to pretend that capitalism serves the general welfare.

It's been a hundred years, isn't it time we stopped blaming Captain Smith for sinking the Titanic?

        •  I would say #4: 'to MAKE capitalism serve the GW.' (0+ / 0-)

We are, after all, masters of our own fates.  In the final analysis, any particular political-economy is a man-made system.  FDR and the New Deal Democrats proved that the dialectic could work both ways.

Which is why the plutocrats have been trying to destroy the New Deal, Liberalism and democracy itself ever since.
