  •  The good news is the Republican (9+ / 0-)

lunatics probably won't take yes for an answer.

And even if they do, I'm not sure how the Democratic leadership sells this shit sandwich to their caucuses, esp. after Reid said SS should be off the table (not to mention Biden's promising not to mess with SS during the campaign.)

Don't get me wrong, I don't underestimate the willingness of Democratic pols to sell out their constituents, but Social Security cuts (!!) could be a bridge too far.

    •  This may indeed be a shit sandwhich (0+ / 0-)

But I have to depart from progressive orthodoxy on your belief that the fiscal cliff is not also a shit sandwhich. This diary makes the case that this deal is not moral, but isn't not getting a deal also immoral?

How did we get so convinced that doing nothing is a win? Yes, all the tax rates expire...including on the middle class.

So, we decimate middle class take home pay, the unemployed lose their UE insurance, and we tip the economy back into recession. A recession which would also, y'know, cause unemployment and decrease government revenue.

But, as long as progressives have convinced themselves that the fiscal cliff is painfree or even a victory, then any deal to avert it will, by definition, be a shit sandwhich, won't it?
