      do for his "legacy"? I don't understand that. He doesn't seem like much of a legacy-creating president to me. I'm not trying to sound sharp, really don't understand what this deal would do for how he's viewed historically.

        And Dolores Kearns Goodwin and the rest of the historian set. He probably thinks that if he's remembered as the President who "brought both sides to the table" to make the 1% happy at the expense of making the 99% feel "some pain", he'll be revered in DC. Everyone (and by "everyone" I mean the Very Serious People) in DC will love him.

        And it wouldn't hurt to have "bipartisan cred" on the speaking tour circuit.

        He honestly believes in austerity. And if that's the road for him to get the plaudits of the pundit class, then he'll go that way.

        The Grand Bargain must be stopped at all costs to protect the 99%.
