  •  short term gain, long term pain (6+ / 0-)

Seems to be the negotiating strategy of this administration.

The Republicans get permanent cuts in Social Security.

We get a temporary extension of UI (which would normally be extended without any concessions for any other administration.)

    •  Precisely, on a net present value basis, the cuts. (5+ / 0-)

It's 200B over ten years vs 15B over 1 year.

      It's a no-brainer.

      •  Not a no brainer (0+ / 0-)

if your unemployment is running out and you have a family.

Look, I agree that Obama should never have proposed the SS cuts, especially at this stage of the negotiations, but 2 million people and their families are a lot of hostages (not to mention that the economy would be depressed by that alone).

I do think Obama needs to take the case to the country, and make it clear in a national speech that Republicans are using a phony crisis to tear down the programs that people love in order to keep taxes low on the wealthy

Frankly, I don't know what Obama should do in the end, but I don't think the Unemployment extension should be overlooked as a factor.
