  •  Israel gun control . (47+ / 0-)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/...

The regulation for gun ownership became stricter following the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. Before that, there were virtually no restrictions on gun ownership. Gun ownership in Israel is now considered a privilege and not a right.

It is forbidden in Israel to own any kind of firearm, including air pistols and rifles, without a firearms license. Israel Defense Forces officers honorably discharged with the rank of non-commissioned officer, reservists honorably discharged with the rank of regimental commander, ex-special forces enlisted men, retired police officers with the rank of sergeant, retired prison guards with the rank of squadron commander, licensed public transportation drivers transporting a minimum of five people, and full-time dealers of jewellery or large sums of cash or valuables, Civil Guard volunteers, and residents of militarily strategic buffer zones considered essential to state security are eligible for licenses allowing them to possess one handgun. Reservists honorably discharged with the rank of regimental commander are also eligible for licences allowing them to possess one rifle. Licensed hunters may possess one shotgun, and licensed animal-control officers are allowed to possess two rifles. Civil Guard snipers may possess one rifle. To legally own a gun as a souvenir, prize, inheritance, or award of appreciation from the military, an individual must first present proper documentation that they are about to receive it. Permits for gun collectors are extremely rare, and typically only given to ex-high-ranking officers. To obtain a gun license, an applicant must be a resident of Israel for at least three consecutive years, have no criminal record, be in good health, have no history of mental illness, pass a weapons-training course, and be over a certain age (20 for women who completed military service or civil service equivalent, 21 for men who completed military service or civil service equivalent, 27 for those who did not complete military service or civil service equivalent, 45 for residents of East Jerusalem). Gun licenses must be renewed every three years. Firearms permits are given only for personal use, not for business in the firearms sale. Permit holders for self-defense purposes may own only one handgun, and may purchase a maximum of fifty rounds a year, except for those shot at firing ranges.

    •  So, as soon as we institute these gun control (14+ / 0-)

laws, and military draft, etc., I might be willing to let a teacher pack heat.

No, not even then.  No one is hyper-aware of their surroundings 100% of the time.  It only takes an instant to have someone get the "drop" on you and then it only matters that you are dead or incapacitated and your weapon is free to be used by the shooter or terrorist.

      My core tenets:
      • I am intolerant of only intolerance
      • I am prejudiced only against prejudice
      • I hate only hate
I don't know why Republicans continue to contrive to be on the wrong end of these three tenets.

To: The Rt. Hon. Steven LaTourette
      Washington, D.C.

      Dear Sir,

It has come to my attention that our dangerously-lax gun regulations are far more lenient than those currently in place within the State of Israel.  Currently in place are the following lawful restrictions:

Genuine Reason Required for Firearm Licence
Applicants for a gun owner’s licence in Israel are required to prove genuine reason to possess a firearm, for example, self-defence, hunting and sport
       Minimum Age for Firearm Possession
The minimum age for gun ownership in Israel is 27 years and 21 years if served in the military 30

      Gun Owner Background Checks
An applicant for a firearm licence in Israel must pass background checks which consider health, mental and criminal records

      Gun Owner Licensing Period
In Israel gun owners must re-apply and re-qualify for their firearm licence every 3 years

      Licensing Records
In Israel, authorities maintain a record of individual civilians licensed to acquire, possess, sell or transfer a firearm or ammunition

Limit on Quantity, Type of Ammunition
A licensed firearm owner in Israel is permitted to possess a limited quantity of ammunition

      And
It is forbidden in Israel to own any kind of firearm, including air pistols and rifles, without a firearms license. It seems both ironic and somewhat quixotic that the Congress of the United States can dare call itself "a friend of Israel" when, as an allegedly-civilized culture,  we clearly allow our nation to behave so much more irresponsibly regarding the proliferation of firearms than the Israeli State, a nation so much more clearly at risk from within than our own Republic.

I humbly ask that you draw up and introduce legislation by which the United States can bring forth a set of well-reasoned regulations governing the issue of firearms proliferation that are similar, if not identical, to those currently in full force and effect within the legal boundaries of the Israeli State."

THIS is the message that needs to be sent.  Tell the GOP that it's a choice between AIPAC and the NRA.  Tell them every hour of every day until the end of time.  TELL THEM!!!

I count even the single grain of sand to be a higher life-form than the likes of Sarah Palin and her odious ilk.
