  •  I walked to the town library and to piano lessons (10+ / 0-)

during school.  My teacher reminded me of the time so I wouldn't be late.  Friends who lived in town walked home for lunch a lot.

First year in high school a friend and I walked downtown most days for a hamburger...  no permission-didn't ask and nobody seemed concerned

Of course, that was in the late 1940s and '50s.   We've made a lot of progress, huh?

    •  Ya know.... (7+ / 0-)

      I'm a baby boomer.
We had too many kids in elementary school, so much so that in third grade there wasn't room for us in any of the schools and we had class in the local VFW hall.
It was an interesting year.  And fun.  And different.
We were allowed to walk down to the local pharmacy which had a lunch counter. Third grade!  But there were rules, walk hand-in-hand with a friend, stay on the sidewalk, wait for the crossing guard, we knew everyone in town and they all watched out for us.  Or we could wade in the pond behind the VFW in nice weather, or sled down the hill when it was snowy.
      Different times.
Not to mention the old vets who didn't get the memo the VFW wasn't open afternoons for the downstairs bar.  We had impromptu story times with the guys who inadvertently wandered into third grade when they thought they were visiting their local watering hole (more than once).  Nice old geezers full of stories to tell a roomful of kids, and the teachers let them tell them.  It was, after all, an education of sorts.
      Different times.

I think, therefore I am........................... Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose....AKA Engine Nighthawk - don't even ask!
