I've played a couple of the most "important" FPS games, including a handful of the Halo games, but only single player.  I once bought a CoD game for $10 but didn't really care for it ;p.

I suspect that a lot of the "deviance" found in some of these surveys (and studies out there do exist, and we need to be able to address them head-on) may be concentrated in the FPS online community, which I'm led to understand is basically unmoderated and is filled with sexism, racism and other generally unpleasant behaviors that would make a 4chan b user blush (Googling that is absolutely, 100% NSFW and will probably require brain bleach).  The online FPS gaming community is a niche within a subculture within a genre.  So, frankly, if the FPS online community is going to destroy all of gaming, I'm OK with throwing them under the regulatory bus, within the limits of the Constitution (and Constitutionally, all that can really be done is age restriction, which is OK with me so long as it's applied fairly).  I would not be sad if some of the FPS server operators, particularly Activision, are shamed into meaningful moderation.

There's also the question of games that are uniquely violent, such as Postal and the new Duke Nukem, but the free market usually - but not always - takes care of that.

Having said that, Lieberman's investigation will likely fail to make that differentiation.  Having said THAT, nobody will listen to a washed-up has-been Senator who many see as having betrayed both parties.  His last gasp for relevancy is likely to fall on deaf ears.

Does your son play the CoD games online?  With or without mic?  I suspect that, without mic, a person could be blissfully unaware of a lot of that stuff, as the text-based messages that can be sent on consoles are usually pretty limited.  Even then, if they play with mic but only with known friends, that would also probably duck those issues.

from online gaming is Fat, Ugly or Slutty.

Damnation, if I caught my son (or daughter) making some of these comments, there would be some serious discussion of how utterly revolting this stuff is, and there would be no computer time AT ALL for at least a month.  (Homework?  Go to the library and use a book - maybe then you'll appreciate your computer.)

Whatever possesses people to say these kinds of things?

I am coming around to the idea that a little less anonymity might not be the worst thing that could happen to the internet. That's a tough issue though, especially as long as potential employers judge applicants by what they can dig up online.

      •  Dude (0+ / 0-)

My parents didn't watch what I played, so I played all kinds of stuff since I was 12 (and still do, now that I am 32).

But they would surely have heard me cussing up a storm in the house and beat the crap out of me. How do today's parents let their kids talk so much trash on xbox live? Are they freaking deaf (the parents, not the kids)? It bothers the crap out of me. I can't have sound on when xbox live is going, something about per-prubescent high-pitched voices called me the c-word after I headshot them a few times.
