Before there were electronic games there were games like squad leader where you rolled dice and moved men and materials around a board.

Violent War movies have been around since at least WWII.

The first really violent first person shooter game I can remember was Doom. My sense is that games like that are emotional, hormones get stirred up.

Call of Duty which that Newtown kid was playing is a war game; slightly different from anything with an urban scenario.

The essence of most games is that you and the people around you who get killed are the good guys and the bad guy targets are just targets.

Not all games have scenarios in which you kill bad people. In some games you get to massacre women and children along with everything else that walks or crawls, flies or swims.

Since 2007 there has been battlenet with WoW, Diablo and other games that are considered addictive. People play them with such focus that they can't be distracted by food, sex or the need to relieve a bladder.

None of that intensity comes anywhere near what you see at a machine gun range where people are willing to expend $2500 on a box of 20 mm ammo to reduce an SUV to nothing in seconds.

anybody remember that one? i remember watching the protagonist throw a molotov cocktail into a marching band and then turn a gun on themselves. the little character said "i regret nothing" and you died to quit.

that was 1996, i think. i was working for a game company at the time and we were astounded.

If only Michael Phelps hadn't smoked that pot...imagine what he could have accomplished with motivation and good lung capacity.

      •  there is always an example (0+ / 0-)

to be trotted out, one individual in a broader group that opponents can point at and say "look! look here, this one proves us right!"

Postal was a horrible, awful game. Even discounting the shock value, it was just plain bad. The shock value and the press it generated were all it had going for it. That is the case with every "noteworthy" violent game to come out. They are rare and generally become well known only because of the controversy they generate. If people stopped taking games so seriously in the first place, game developers wouldn't e so tempted to put in shocking and objectionable elements just for the press.
