  •  The US Army makes one of the best FPS, for free... (6+ / 0-)

    ... America's Army.

I've been playing it since beta testing back in 2001. In the 12 years it's been out, as a recruiting/marketing tool by the Army, I've killed 8,000+ enemy with a sniper rifle and many more with varies assault rifles and machine guns.

I found it especially therapeutic after 9/11. It gave me the chance to play with friends who went to Afghanistan.... yes the Army guys actually play it on deployment... and have gotten the chance to chat with all manner of active duty and veteran soldiers over the years from 18 yr old to 60+ yr old.

Nobody turned into a homicidal maniac, and the Army spends $millions on continued development both as a marketing tool and as a soldier simulator. They make it as realistic as possible BUT do not include all the BLOOD that reality would dictate, as a concession to the very mentality we are discussing in this diary.

To me, I want AA to be 100% realistic, I want kids looking to be recruited to have as close to the real facts as technology will allow, but the political elements and the scapegoating have actually forced what is supposed to be a realistic war simulator to "sugar coat" elements of the experience. I find that sad. Hiding from the truth and reality is never the right way to go, and never really solves anything. It makes some fearful and ignorant people "feel" better. Sanitizing war is always the wrong plan is you truly want less of it.

But on topic, none of the FPS has CREATED any maniac's. So dear Society, look elsewhere for your scapegoats, in fact look in the mirror. It is your refusal to spend your precious taxpayer money on mental health that is responsible for 99% of all these mass shootings. You leave the truly disturbed and insane free to roam the countryside with no mechanism of help and treatment, and the rest of us as potential next victims of your societal malfeasance.

I mean ideally, Progressives should want America's Army to have Soldier of Fortune 1 & 2's insanely gruesome G.H.O.U.L Damage System from back in the day. Limbs shredded off messily, holes in torsos, organs spilling out, explicitly detailed collapsed & shattered skulls.

It'd be nasty, but it'd be the most honest recruiting propaganda EVER.

While it's fairly realistic on the weapons, is absolutely wrong on the scenarios.

They're typical OPFOR missions which assume the enemy will actually, you know, engage in a stand up fight.

I guess randomly searching people and waiting to get blown up wasn't their style.

I don't blame Christians. I blame Stupid. Which sadly is a much more popular religion these days.
