in the classroom.  If I had to shoot, I could not live with myself.  At my community college, the campus security folks used to be unarmed and just unlocked doors for those who forgot their keys, or jump-started your car if you left your lights on.  Now they are all armed.

    •  Where is this idea coming from that (0+ / 0-)

every teacher is going to have to report to the principal's office for issuance of a hand gun?

Just because some have suggested that some proportion of concealed carry qualified school personnel may be allowed to carry at school?

I feel relatively certain that those with your or the diarist's point of view would would be allowed, yea encouraged, to opt out.

I don't want to be responsible for the deaths of my little ones, because I don't carry a gun--and I don't want to carry a gun.
And she's right. If we start arming our teachers, it will be yet another thing to hate them for when children are shot on their watch and they didn't carry a gun.

My husband gave up a lucrative biology career to go back to his dream job of teaching almost a decade ago. I know he wouldn't want to have a gun at school. He'd be in constant fear that someone would get at it no matter how he secured it. Given that they've gotten into locked furniture to steal the iPod he listens to when grading papers and doing lesson prep after school, it's not an unreasonable fear. Moreover, at just over 6 ft, he's not a small man, but he says he has students who loom over him and WAY outclass him in strength. What happens when one of them takes the gun from him or from one of the small women who teach with him?

Just... no. Arming teachers as if they were police is a terrible idea. That's not what they signed up for.

at the edge of an elementary school campus--separated from the main school by quite some distance.  No "concealed carry qualified school personnel" could possibly reach us in time to do any good.

The solution to these murders must be found through getting the guns off the streets, and changing the circumstances which underlie the killings.  Our schools need to be safe spaces for little children, not prisons staffed with armed guards.

To suggest our future should be to extend the militarization of our schools and society (even with exceptions for "conscientious objectors" as one commentor here suggests) is totally absurd and without any merit.
