  •  We knew this was coming. We know it's a cut. (20+ / 0-)

But pretzel logic is still being used for justification when there really is no justification for a Democratic president offering up his party's signature legislation as a bonus prize in negotiations over the deficit

    •  11 dimensional quantum pretzel logic. (15+ / 0-)

Chained CPI is not a cut

      and

The President is "pretending" to accept it to appear "reasonable" when Boehner rejects it.

Except the fucking joke is on all of us if Boehner has the sense to call the bluff.

    •  This is especially important (12+ / 0-)

as we know that SS does not impact upon the deficit ... there is no reason for this to be done. Most importantly, cutting the deficit in a period where the advanced capitalist world (including the US) is still in an economic crisis is stupid economic policy. It will impact upon any possibility of job creation and getting out of the crisis ... the money going to those that spend their incomes (rather than the rich) is needed to enable getting the economy out of crisis. When you cut the deficit in this way, cutting money going to the poorest, what happens is that there is less demand for goods which means that they will not be produced which means a decrease in the size of the economy ... in the midst of an economic crisis, this is perhaps the most inane economic policy that could be imagined. Take a look at the deliberate creation of an economic depression in Greece and Spain due to the cuts in social welfare state and state sector sector jobs cause by the introduction of austerity. Now, add the obvious point that the poor, the elderly, the working poor and disabled are being primarily targetted and the even more obvious point that this is primarily falling on women who live longer and hence are larger numbers of the elderly, who are more dependent upon social services (due to social reproduction roles of child-care and caring for elderly and disabled) and because they are employed more in the state sector and this is part and parcel of the war on women that we are seeing throughout the advanced capitalist world.
