    They got 47% and kept the House.  That's not a Goldwater-style disaster.  They can bounce back from this and continue to be competitive.

    And remember, Nixon won just four years after the Goldwater catastrophe.

      Because Hubert Humphrey wasn't, like groovy enough for the New Left. This was a man who wanted to pass a law that the government had to give jobs out if there was more than 3% unemployment.

      It sorta reminds me of what's going on now. And why I'm fairly sure that 2014 is going to suck for Democrats. They won't be liberal enough, so what we'll do to fix that is elect a bunch more tea partiers.

      Anyway, the real result of Goldwater was Reagan. Nixon won because of the anxious social climate in, riots, etc. Romney was no Goldwater, just a hack. He provides no new movement to build on.

      But I suspect the rumors of the GOP's demise are greatly exaggerated, especially since their opponents are a circular firing squad.

      GOP: The Party of Acid rain, Abortion of the American Dream, and Amnesty for Wall Street.
