We in the US are more armed and more fearful AND more preyed upon than people in all the other developed countries, and there is a wealth of data to demonstrate this.   I think we can agree it is unlikely human nature is any less predatory in Europe, but their stats on gun violence are far less horrific than ours.

Your argument leads right into the arm-all-teachers-all-the-time lunacy which is an incredibly noxious and delusional approach.   As our talented cartoonist has ably illustrated:  http://www.dailykos.com/...

I've seen the damage it does when people who've never missed a payment are tossed out of their homes by banks that don't have the title documents, not to mention giving insurance companies carte blanche to control access to medical treatment and prescriptions while charging exorbitant fees for their benevolent interference in patients' healthcare.

      •  You're side-stepping. (0+ / 0-)

There's many fine discussion to be had about greed, or for that matter about healthcare policy.  but they are relatively unrelated to THIS conversation.   Frankly it was such a nonsequitur that I assumed you used the word "venal" as a less-than-precise substitute for "ill-intentioned".

more a basic part of human nature than "criminal", maybe. It usually ends up in the same place, though.

Please, if I'm side-stepping, what is the issue I've missed by noting that the world actually is a dangerous place and humans by their very nature make it more so?

          •  You speak disparagingly of (0+ / 0-)

"running and hiding and hoping", of "letting violence go unchecked as happened Friday", of choosing "deliberately" to be preyed upon endlessly.

As if the fault more with the children of Sandy Hook and their teachers, for being such wusses as not to be armed, rather than with Ms. Lanza, who stocked up on lethal weaponry and failed to secure it.

Are you, or are you not, advocating GREATER use of guns within schools in particular and society in general?

            •  I'm arguing that we need a cultural change, lgmcp (0+ / 0-)

I cannot go back in time to before the killing of Nancy Lanza or Adam's other victims last Friday and pinpoint a place where he could have been stopped, because I do not have enough information.

I speak disparagingly of "running and hiding and hoping for the best" because ... well, frankly, it doesn't stop the slaughter to respond in that fashion.

I speak despairingly of continuing to choose not to stand up for ourselves.

I don't think GREATER use of guns is necessary, in terms of sheer numbers; but there must be more effective ways to stop a murderer than, essentially, hide and hope for the best. There MUST be.

              •  What kind of cultural change? (0+ / 0-)

Because your remarks continue to make me think that what you primarily have in mind,is basically an increase in armed self-defense.

                •  if you count krav maga (0+ / 0-)

it probably does .... for sure, I think we need to be more proactive in our own defense.

How about for starters we take down the signs advertising that shooters cannot possibly expect anybody in our schools to resist them?
