President Obama would make this deal, but he knew it might be rejected and once it was, he allowed the leaks to portray Bohner in a certain way.   While I like ot believe the best,  it is very possible he considers this the best of several poor alternatives.  Many of us disagree with him on that.

...taking the deal that he offered on Monday, though it chaps me that SS was included in it and I think it smells like a tax hike on middle-class which might be a problem politically.

But my big problem is that it was the kind of offer that was never going to be accepted as is, and as Obama made pretty clear today, he's willing to give significant new ground on taxes, and probably a little more ground on spending (though less).

But who knows. It's worth having an opinion now, but to stay open minded about the possibility of things not ending up as bad as they seem likely to end up.

it was not very good, but as just one step in a series of possible concessions, it would be terrible.  But, yes, it's possible it won't end up as bad as that.

I like that Dems and progressives arre mobilizing on the chained cpi issue.
