and other first person shooters for many years. I find the online community of players to be majority liberal/progressive. And very diverse. FPS's are skill games.

There are of course some righty wingnuts. They are usually shamed into shutting up.

    •  It isn't the games, it is the civil rights: (1+ / 0-)

the 50s weren't the magical Eden we like to pretend they were.  There was plenty of violence against blacks in both blatant discrimination and denigration by day and lynch mob at night.  Any crazy white guy who wanted to blow off steam could simply find a black kids and openly taunt him in public.  Now that avenue is closed so the crazy white guys go shoot up schools and malls.

After all, what is more plausible:
      1)  The civil rights era ended a nasty violent sub-culture in our society, but later on video games spawned a new nasty sub-culture.
      - OR -
      2)  The nasty sub-culture in our society that took advantage of racism and discrimination never left, it simply found a new venue.

and their contempt for the Latin schools was applauded by Theodoric himself, who gratified their prejudices, or his own, by declaring that the child who had trembled at a rod would never dare to look upon a sword.

    •  Which makes me thing of Jack Thompson... (0+ / 0-)

I wonder if Jack Thompson (the guy who calls every video game a "murder simulator") ever got money from the NRA to blame things other than the actual weapons used to kill people.

It would make sense, since his emphasis has always been on how video games can take normal (and thus potentially-responsible-gun-owning) kids and turn them into hardened killing machines through a miraculous training regimen of hitting W, S, A and D repeatedly.

      •  In fact (0+ / 0-)

The first thing every Quake gamer does when he installs his game is turn off the gore. It just gets in the way.
