      You can't hide

      The Main Case

A Buddhist pilgrim named Zuma from Hunan arrived at Baizhang’s monastery. Besides studying Zen, he specialized in the mirrors of human relationships and engaged in geomancy. Baizhang was establishing temples in many places and had to make a decision. Zuma spoke to Baizhang, saying, “Recently, at Hunan, I came upon a mountain named Dagui where fifteen hundred Buddhist disciples might reside.”

Baizhang said, “Should I go there as abbot?”

Zuma said, “It’s not where Master Baizhang should reside.”

      Baizhang said, “Why is that?”

Zuma said, “The Master is the teacher of bone. That place is a flesh mountain. If you were to go there, less than a thousand disciples would gather.”

Baizhang said, “Is there anyone in my congregation here who could assume the position?”

Zuma said, “Let me examine them and see.”

At that time, the monastic Hua had the position of head monastic. Baizhang asked his attendant to summon Hua. When Hua arrived, Baizhang said to the pilgrim Zuma, “How about this fellow?”

Zuma asked Hua to speak a few words and to walk back and forth, and then he said to Baizhang, “He won’t do.”

Baizhang then summoned Lingyou. At that time, Lingyou served as the head cook. Zuma took one look at Lingyou and said, “This is the abbot of Mount Gui.”

That night Baizhang summoned Lingyou to his room and instructed him. “My faith lies here,” he said. “But as for the glorious Mount Gui, you will go there as abbot and carry on my teachings for future generations.”

When Hua heard of this, he said to Baizhang in front of the whole congregation, “I am the one who was promoted to the position of head monastic. Why is the chief cook going to attain the position of abbot?”

Baizhang said, “If you can say a word of Zen before all of the monastics, then I’ll appoint you to the position of abbot.” Baizhang then pointed at a water pitcher and said, “Without calling this a water pitcher, what will you call it?”

Hua said, “You can’t call it a piece of wood.”

Baizhang then asked Lingyou the same question. Lingyou then kicked over the water pitcher and went out.

Baizhang laughed and said, “The head monastic loses.”

Lingyou then traveled to Mount Gui to be installed as the abbot.

      The Commetary
Those who uphold the teachings of our school are able to distinguish dragons from snakes in the blink of an eye. In walking, talking, asking, and answering, illumination and function must be simultaneously manifest. Provisional and real are not two. The matter cannot be avoided....
