    Thanks for the bouquets, they are most appreciated.  I understand the brickbats, also.  I've struggled with your points, but the challenge is that the Second Amendment.  It gives the "right to bear arms" and has been upheld by the courts.  The courts have said you can regulate the guns, but not take them away.  I personally believe that "assault weapon" bans miss the point.  It's high capacity magazines and high velocity hollow point rounds that cause the most deaths.  That's where we need to focus.  I've also proposed a lifetime responsibility doctrine where all guns must be purchased through FFL (licensed dealers) after a background check and proof of competency for the type of weapons being purchased.  THEN, that owner is responsible for that weapon forever.  The only way to relieve that responsibility is to sell it through an FFL.  Ultimate responsibility could reduce the number of guns sold illegally, are stolen or "lost".
