    bomb craters, and an heroic story that can be understood in context. My memories of Verdun are more visceral - the ossuary and the disintegrating fortifications.

      The memorial at Vimy Ridge is an impressive one. Of course, I visited there the same day I visited the little one at the town of La Boisselle near Lochnagar Crater, perhaps making Vimy that much more impressive. The one at La Boisselle is hard to get to, impossible to see from the road and on the edge of farmland. Vimy Ridge felt to me more like entering a vast cathedral.
