  •  Grandpa's rifle worries me less (9+ / 0-)

than the new model of the Bushmaster that's in the factory today. Let's focus on what we can do.

and disabusing people of misconceptions regarding what is and isn't possible does exactly that.

i'm not saying your idea is a bad one; i'm just saying that people need to be really clear on what implementing the idea would look like, its possible scope, etc.

so pointing out that this could really only apply to new purchases is part of that discussion.

Gotta start somewhere.  It would lower the temperature and raise awareness, and start to prevent some tragedies.  Time to invest in the gun safe industry.

Grandpa's rifle over the fireplace is one thing, Semi-automatics are another.  Perhaps if insurance regs had been there, Adam's mother would have not let her mentally disturbed son have access to guns.

(And yes, I think Adam had more going on than just Aspergurers.)

My 'grandpa rifle' was a semi-auto .308 rifle. It was discontinued in 1959 (same year my mom was born).

        Does it fall under this?

        •  Obviously not. (0+ / 0-)

For those of us in our 60's, grandpa rifles were obtained pre-WW One.  Passed down from their fathers or grandfathers.  The one/two bullet at a time kind.  Colonial even.

The kind I learned to shot with in the summer of 1960, when your mother was 1 yo.  This was at a very expensive, exclusive girls camp in VT, where I won a marksmanship award after a month.  Not knowing they gave out awards - completely surprised.
