      I hear what you are saying.   It only affects the defict if (1) they can steal from social security trust fund or (2) social security would otherwise have to be made up from general revenue.  Neither is true.  

      I think chained cpi is the cost for a tax raise vote by Rs.  Tax raises are anethma to Rs and Social security cits (which this really is) are to Dems.

      If truw, and we go over the cliff, the rationale for doing it falls way since Rs will not necessarily have to vote for a tax raise.    

      But any deal will cause pain to some folks.  Better no big deal.

        i.e. stumbling over that curb will cause pain to those unemployed and needing extended benefits. Of course the rethugs think they should die anyway.
