  •  It's extremely unlikely your body temperature (11+ / 0-)

will be 98.6°F During the day your body temperature fluctuates quite a bit. Other than that, great cartoon. This comment has been contributed by the Society of Obsessive Nitpickers.

To me progress is not so much a goal as it is a process and I believe it will not follow a straight course. Remember, the drops of water that form the river may not take the shortest path but they will still reach the ocean.

    •  Then again, 98.6°F is no less likely than (2+ / 0-)

any other temperature in the general human body temperature range. It could be 96.9°F or 99.5°F and either of those would be rather unlikely too.

However, you are right to question the common wisdom of "normal human body temperature is 98.6°F". Giving a number that precise, to a tenth of a degree Fahrenheit, really is misleading. Body temperature varies widely from that number, not only over the course of a day but between different parts of your body, and that's perfectly normal.

The only reason that number is cited is because 98.6°F is equivalent to 37°C, which is the approximation of human body temperature used by the rest of the world. Giving a number rounded to the nearest degree Celsius is much more reasonable than a number rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree Fahrenheit.

And the metric system is more reasonable than our American system of measurement overall. Just sayin'.
