....in Jamaica, where it is actually very easy to shop mom and pop places, especially eating establishments.  I can't think of one specific storefront takeout place, or restaurant along Hillside Avenue that ISN'T owned and run by local immigrants who loved food and cooking and wanted all their lives to open a restaurant.

And the diversity of the population ensures a wide range of beliefs and ideology, without asking any questions.

I cannot understand why ANYONE in NYC would eat at Papa John's or Subway or places like that. I can better understand maybe Popeye's, but when it comes to something like pizza or subs you can find much better on practically every corner.

One chain I am so happy has hit NYC though not yet close enough for me to shop at routinely is Trader Joe's. I grew up with them and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. And on Responsible Shopper they are the highest rated company they look at in America (though they too have some flaws).

I also notice the Fairway opening up near where I work has put  up a sign saying they are proud to use only union labor. I hope it is true! And if so then good for them for bragging about it! Never shopped at Fairway but may check out the new store once they open just because they put up that pro-union sign.

in the city...and definitely better than the scary-looking C-Towns and A-somethingorother you see around.

I agree:  I cannot fathom how any ny'er ever goes to a papa john's in the city!

        •  Still prefer... (0+ / 0-)

Still bet I prefer Trader Joe's and the Park Slope Food Co-op, but then again if it is a block from where I work, picking up stuff at Fairway becomes a good option!

I forgot to comment on that part.
