  •  Just because it's possible to cut some expenses (3+ / 0-)

doesn't make it a good idea or something we should be asking seniors to do. It's one thing to ask a college student on financial aid to buy used instead of new books to save money. It's another to ask them to skip a meal a day. And it's a TOTALLY different thing to ask seniors to do so. As in crazy cruel.

    •  Yes but those kinds of cutbacks would also (0+ / 0-)

presumably be included in the Chained CPI (remember, regular substitution like chicken instead of steak is already included in the regular CPI).  Not to mention things like "substituting" a food bank for a regular grocery store (and if there are no food banks near you, tough shit).

In practice, given how meager current benefits and COLA are, not so much. There's really not much fat to cut for most seniors. None, really. This is true for both my parents. We're not talking about going from meat to chicken but from processed chicken to bologna past its expiration date.

this isn't only about food and products, it is also about possible home and car repairs or replacing appliances like an air conditioner or stove, and also property taxes, all of which go up in price.  There are a lot of concerns, especially for people who have to go on disability early in their earning years, this could kill someone who only gets $500.00 to $700.00 dollars a month to live on.

Moreover, many over 55 who were laid off or were put on part time to save the company money (I know a few in this situation) will have their Social Security payments calculated at a reduced rate because SS uses the last five years of your working and salary to calculate your monthly income.

This will be a bigger disater than they know if it passes.

Obviously, we're nowhere near that these days.

this isn't a perfect world?  OMG, could someone please let the politicians know that because they seem to think that we have magic fairy dust fix the problems they have created for us.
