  •  When you can machine those parts... (7+ / 0-)

in exact tolerances in your basement, then I will buy this argument.

You don't just ban the guns, you ban the manufacture of said weapons.

I'm certain that somebody can make one, given the resources.  It is also MUCH more expensive than cooking up meth in your basement.

But we track the sale of cold medicine, and not machined gun parts.

    •  We're almost there now. (0+ / 0-)

      The future is coming...

      •  I note he only used the parts... (0+ / 0-)

that did not require exact tolerances.  I don't think we have to worry about a 3d printer doing steel forging any time soon.

        •  All that you need is to get around the law. (0+ / 0-)

Apparently what tends to get banned in weapons bans is the receiver.  So, the fact that someone can print one presents a legal problem.  Just print that part, acquire all the other non-restricted parts of the gun (like what this diary points out), and put together your very own unregulated gun.

          •  Current law is inadequate. (0+ / 0-)

Hence the need for a ban.

The law is based off the assumption that certain parts cannot be created easily.  It still holds true for the barrel, chamber, etc.

The law banning the receiver was in place due to the assumption that creating a fully/semi auto trigger mechanism at home would be impossible.

Since this is no longer the case, we need to look seriously at the rest of the parts.
