  •  winter storms are really different from hurricanes (6+ / 0-)

    and tropical depressions. Those develop by themselves over time, they intensify, and move as discrete weather entities. Ergo, naming them makes perfect sense.

    Winter storms are dynamic, they develop, form, and dissipate often as combinations of fronts. They are much more fluid in many regards from hurricanes. Naming them doesn't make sense, and is probably one reason the NWS is not interested in giving them discrete names, since they are about science and not marketing.
