    It's a problem.  In fact, it's a KNOWN problem with democracies, that when the shit gets tough, democracies break down into crowds of squabbling schoolchildren pushing, shoving, and tearing apart the toy they all want for themselves.

    I can't offer a solution that anyone here would like.  I know how this usually ends, but hey, maybe we'll get lucky.  We did in 1932.  If Obama were to decide to do what's necessary to drag us back from the brink, he has the personality profile to actually avoid going too far and destroying what he's come to save.  That's worth something.

    But dysfunction is nothing new in representative democracy.  It's called stasis, and it's what destroyed the city-states of ancient Greece and the Roman Republic.  Usually about 200-300 years after the original constitutions were written.  So this is right on schedule.  The unpleasant thing about studying history is, it doesn't really keep you from repeating it when everybody around you failed the test.
