  •  I am probably older than you. (12+ / 0-)

And I would say, when it comes to processing emotional baggage from childhood and letting it go, time is a great help. As long as you are always willing to commit to growing in wisdom, character, and self-knowledge, time makes as least a big a difference in your outlook as therapy (and I'm a big believer in that, too).

There was no physical want in my childhood. But my early life was, shall we say, deprived. Clearly, I didn't get the basics I was entitled to, back then, so I have had to spend hard years raising myself. It's time I will obviously never get back. Well into adulthood, I am still working against a deficit. But I believe I'm further along the path now than I have ever been.

There are many of us. The best we can hope for, is to have a good handle on how our early experience affects our present outlook. To make a huge generalization here :) I believe progressives are generally better at that than people on the RW.

I also believe there are very different ways of letting go and moving on, which which our culture egregiously simplifies as "forgiveness." I would say your resolution of your own relationship to your father looked very different from that. Makes me curious to read Obama's book, which I started and put down once before.

    Thanks for the diary.
