  •  I grew up with Republicans (7+ / 0-)

Both my grandfather and my father were ward leaders...almost everybody I knew was a Republican...they were good solid decent people, always there to help out when someone needed it..

    But those days are gone.

I very infrequently go back to old haunts when I am in the US, meet up with people, and wonder where did all these rabid dogs come from?

was a Democrat.  He would rant on about welfare, marijuana and Communism, and she voted for McGovern.

This used to happen a lot in the old days.

You have exactly 10 seconds to change that look of disgusting pity into one of enormous respect!

      •  My father was really conservative... (7+ / 0-)

        late 60s, pro-war, yada, yada....

Then my older brother came back on a stretcher and he got to see the horrific conditions at a VA hospital....

Then I came back on a stretcher, and he saw it again, to a much lesser extent because I was still in military hospitals...

My mother, who lost a brother in the Marshall Islands, was beside herself from all the stress...

Then they tried to draft my younger brother, and that sent my father over the edge...he made serious plans to send my younger brother to Canada, which fortunately were not needed, and was a raving anti-republican the rest of his life....I used to kid him that that last words he ever would speak on earth would be "..fucking Nixon..."

        heh...
