  •  Most retail workers don't get paid sick days. (4+ / 0-)

Most of them have their hours purposely held below the point where they can apply for any benefits at all.
If 40hrs/wk is full-time they are scheduled at 39 hrs/wk.
cosette jr. had a co-worker that (of course) had no medical or dental and was about the same age as I am.
Co-worker had a bad tooth and was treating it by covering it with an aspirin tablet.
She had to wait after her shift ending at 10pm to catch her bus home.
She could not afford a car/gas/insurance/license.
    Who could at $8.00/hr?

Look every one of the cashiers in the face when you check out at any store register. This is their life.
You're getting cheap stuff on their backs.

    •  I know. At one point I was one of those (2+ / 0-)

service industry people.  I have worked fast food.  I remember getting between 16 and 24 hours a week.  I quit because I couldn't live off that amount of hours and I couldn't get a second job AND go to community college. Later I ended up quitting school because eating had to come first.

It is a no win and most don't ever make it out.
