    I would actually have to extend the fruitless effort. "It seemed like it would be hard, so I didn't even try" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

    hmmm, I guess I'll need to spend the next couple years badgering Russian archives and keeping extensive records on the obstructions.

      in the last diary has almost that same paragraph in his book. He wasn't gonna take the patriarch back to England cause it would be hard, but other relatives nagged him so he did.

      His account talks about narrowing it down to a county, and finding a guy with the same name who couldn't be the same guy 'cause he apparently never left England. Once again, Bixby was going to give up, but was convinced to widen the search to surrounding parishes, et voila, the rest is history. (sorry)

      Of course, he wasn't dealing with a really foreign language like Russian, but you get my drift.
