"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
ie Because a "well regulated Milita" is necessary, therefor "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed".

You will notice that "well-regulated" refers to a "Militia"
You will notice that "shall not be infringed" refers to the "right of the people"
You will also notice that belonging to a Milita is not a prerequisite for the "right".....primarily because if it was a prereq, it would no longer be a "right".

Speaking of making others 'proud', the right-wing argued for sacrificing liberty in the name of perceived security as well, with Warrantless Wiretaps, Gitmo & torture.
I rejected it then, and I reject it now.
It is unfortunate that you have such a blase attitude toward the Rights of people whom have done no wrong.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither.

    •  help me understand your interpretation of (0+ / 0-)

the relationship of the first part (A well regulated militia, being necessary. . .) to the second part (the right of the people. . .)

      •  necessary to the security of a free state (0+ / 0-)

is the object of dependency of the first clause.

        •  so what is the relationship between (0+ / 0-)

the need for a well regulated militia and the right of the people to keep and bear arms?

          •  The security of a free state (0+ / 0-)

"was" dependent on a well regulated militia.  But sense we no longer have a well regulated militia to protect the security of a free state in the manner that they were organized at our country's inception, the rational for the 2nd amendment is moot.
