In fact, I encourage both of my daughters to pursue what it is they love no matter how it is labeled. We've had discussions when they come home and say something's a "boy thing" or a "girl thing". We've even talked about how some boys like to wear dresses or makeup and some girls prefer a more masculine sartorial expression. I've told them it doesn't matter what society says they should be doing, because sometimes society has antiquated belief systems and needs to be turned on its head a little. We've discussed loving others and how that can take many forms, that you shouldn't limit yourself to loving someone else of a different sex if the person who makes your heart beat faster is another girl just like them.

I'm sure Charlotte Allen would be appalled at how broad my young children already see the world, but then again it's people like her who will be left behind and not my kids.
