  •  This I know. I taught school many years ago and (11+ / 0-)

    spent a big part of my salary keeping the kids from poor families in new socks, shoes and school supplies. Sad that is still the norm after all these years.

    Something is broken with our government at all levels. Didn't Dickens say, "...ignorance and want. Beware them."

    I think we ignore them to our deteriment.

    •  I only taught for a while, but it was (4+ / 0-)

      more of a hobby since my pay was so low and my special ed students came to me with very little--only some ditto books to run copies from, and those so badly wrinkled by the teachers' aides that they were nearly unreadable for kids with low skills. I spends hundreds a month.

        may have lost hundreds of dollars, but you gained more than that, in my opinion.

          the kids to know what learning was rather than just guessing the answers that might be on the answer sheet.
