man should have won that seat with the same margin as Pres. Obama won the state. Warren had a huge handicap, like it or not, before her, MA voters had problems with electing women in statewide offices. Thats how Romney became Governor.

as many think - since 1990 we've had only one D Gov

      •  Wyoming elected and re-elected a Dem governor (0+ / 0-)

Oklahoma did the same (during the same period of time). Vermont elected and re-elected a Republican governor, as did New York. Should Republicans freak out about losing a senate seat in Oklahoma or Wyoming? Should Democrats do the same in New York and Vermont?

Brown's outperformance of Romney this year had nothing to do with his own popularity.

2002 was ten years ago. To put it plainly, about 15% of the electorate here, the oldest and most old-school people, have died since then and been replaced, as voters, by people 18-28 who are far less likely to be sexist about these things. Since 2002 Martha Coakley has won statewide races. Just not the one that counted the most, because she didn't campaign for it.

Anyway, half the people who switched to Romney in 2002 were suburban women who didn't like O'Brien's smirks during the debate.

would have had a much tougher time defeating Scott Brown. It can't be said that if Elizabeth Warren were a man she would have trounced Scott Brown. ANY DEMOCRAT in MA would have had an uphill climb challenging Brown who had high approval ratings and enjoyed (enjoys) lots of popularity outside Boston and the immediate suburbs. Massachusetts has not elected a woman statewide because never has the right woman run the right campaign, think Coakley 09' and O'Brien 02'.

Warren's gender helped her run up a big win among women.
