  •  I didn`t say it would be easy... (0+ / 0-)

But his only hope at this point is trying to find some compromise between the remaining moderates and Dems. He clearly has to discount about 100 house GOP members. That still leaves him with a fair number to work with to get a bill passed. You just have to hope the Dems realize they are actually bargaining from a position of strength.

Politics is like driving.... (D) forward, (R) reverse.

    •  But the more Dems Boehner needs (0+ / 0-)

the more support he loses from his caucus, not just on policy but politically, meaning that some Repubs who might otherwise vote for a bill on policy might refuse to vote for it because it makes Repubs look weak--that whole nonsense Hastert rule about the "majority of the majority". At which point he'd need a lot more Dems votes than he should need purely on policy, at which point he pulls the bill because if he does that he loses his speakership. It's a Catch-22 that I see no way out of short of a discharge petition or Boehner risking it all.

Or, Obama caves, offers a really bad deal that enough Repubs are willing to vote for that it won't look so embarrassing if they also need some Dem votes to pass it (and they probably won't get that many since most progressive will probably vote against it), it passes the house and senate, and he signs it, and once again he shafts the left--and country.
