a group of us would walk a couple of miles in to the movie theater too, without an adult. We would be outside roaming the neighborhood all day, playing. When we were a bit older we'd go on day long bike rides, and travel dozens of miles away and back (I timed that once, our usual route was about 25 miles and that was in PA, very hilly country). And that was four girls riding alone, we'd leave around 8am and get back by 6. I can't imagine letting my kids do that today. Drivers don't watch out for bikes, there's too many risks for pre-pubescent girls out riding on their own.
Maybe it's because then I grew up out in the country and now we live on the outskirts of a big city. Maybe it's because safety for our kids have really changed that much. Maybe it's just the perception it has. And we didn't even have cell phones back then, we were completely on our own when we were out. Flat tire, broken chain; we dealt with it or we approached someone strangers house and asked for help. Maybe we were just lucky.

probably stayed within about 5 miles when I was younger, but by the time I was 14, I walked through Europe alone, from Denmark to Turkey and back. Not entirely alone, because I'd join groups of other teens backpacking through Europe, staying at youth hostels or camping, sometimes taking a train when the going was really rough or I needed to be somewhere on a deadline, but not really with anyone, either.
