Went riding around the neighborhood with my dad and the dog tonight to see light displays.  Some awesome work done by some of the people.

My favorite was a very fat palm tree that had strands of lights hung on the trunk vertically. Looked like a waterfall.  Then when you got close enough to see the fronds in the dark and the way they arched down, it just added to the effect.

People here, however, still use a lot of white lights.  People at home aren't using too many of them this year.  At home, color has made a come-back, big time.  I guess that trend of more color hasn't caught up here yet.

There was one stretch of street, maybe half a mile, that was lined on both sides with luminaries.  They were all made of gallon-sized plastic jugs.  I saw them being set up this afternoon and could only think that some people did a whole helluva lot of milk-drinking during the year!  LOL.

It looked nice, but I do think I like the luminaries made of paper bags better.  One house on another block had its circular driveway lined with luminaries made from white bags, like the kind you get bakery items in at the grocery store.

    •  That sounds so lovely ... did you take photos? (4+ / 0-)

At least the light displays (if not the weather) will make it feel like the holidays are in full swing for you.

Here, it seems my neighbors are engaging in an unspoken competition where light displays are concerned.  For many years, the white house on the hill lined their roof in lights.  Nothing else, just a roof lined in simple lights.  It was sublime.

Then, the house next to them was purchased and GADZOOKS what a light show they put on.  So much color!  Trees wrapped, a long white picket fence illuminated.  Also very beautiful.  But not to be out-shined, the white house did a little more the following year.  The the year after that, a little more.  And this year?  A tin of treats!  The "new" neighbor did the whole "leave a tin of cookies on the neighbors front step" thing.  So what does this "competitive" neighbor do this year?  Yup.  Bigger tin.  More treats.

So funny, the competition of neighbors.  I love it though, the lights in particular.  I feel a little guilty for not "doing my part" but ... eh.  They don't expect much from Democrats. :)

It was pitch black outside (would have needed a tripod that I didn't have), and I was zipping down the street in a golf cart with one hand holding me in and one hand holding the dog on the seat.  Just didn't work out.  ;-)

At least your neighbors' competition is of the good variety!  I bought my house from the guy who apparently was the neighborhood asshole. I heard so many stories about him after I moved in.  The neighbors were all glad to see him go.

    •  Color is making a comeback here too. (3+ / 0-)

You still see lots of white lights but lots of colors too. I love the different methods folks use to make luminaries.
